Invitation to attend

Dear Colleague

It is with great pleasure that I invite you to attend the next JCA Colloquium to be held in Australia’s second oldest capital, Hobart, from 8 - 10 October 2010. The Colloquium will be held on the waterfront in Hobart at the exciting new venue, the Henry Jones Art Hotel – described by its proprietors as “Australia’s first and only dedicated Art Hotel”.

This year’s colloquium committee (Justice David Harper AM, Justice Roslyn Atkinson, Justice Robert Benjamin, Justice Alan Blow OAM, Chief Magistrate Elizabeth Bolton, Justice Mordecai Bromberg, Judge Richard Cogswell, Judge Allan Fenbury, Chief Magistrate Ian Gray, Magistrate Don Jones, Justice Glenn Martin, Magistrate Marc Sargent and Justice Michael Walton) has produced a terrific programme.

The Hon Ewan Crawford, the Lieutenant-Governor and Chief Justice of Tasmania, will open the Colloquium. The Hon Justice Virginia Bell will deliver the Keynote Address. Professor Patrick McGorry, the 2010 Australian of the Year, will address the extent to which mental health issues/problems bring teenagers/ young offenders into contact with the criminal justice system, and the impact of that contact on their mental health. Justice Glenn Martin will lead a panel session on “Managing Cases in a Post-Aon World” with participants drawn from the Federal, Supreme, District/County and Magistrates’ Courts. Other sessions will address Australia’s need for judicial resources over the next thirty years, jury perceptions of the appropriateness of sentences and the treatment and management of refugees and the application to them of international and domestic law.

The Colloquium offers the invaluable opportunity to catch up with judicial colleagues from all States and Territories. I look forward to welcoming you in Hobart.

Yours sincerely

The Hon Ruth McColl AO
President
Judicial Conference of Australia

Venue - Henry Jones Art Hotel, Hobart
Location: 23 Hunter Street, Hobart

The 2010 JCA Colloquium venue is the five star Henry Jones Art Hotel, Hobart.

The Henry Jones is the first and only dedicated Art Hotel in Australia, with its fusion of antique and modern minimalism, the hotel is truly unique. The sandstone warehouses (dating back to 1825), once home to Sir Henry Jones’ IXL jam factory, have been creatively transformed into a world class waterfront hotel. Views from the suites allow you to experience the unique beauty of Hobart while immersing yourself in their luxury.

Who is Henry Jones?

Henry Jones was born in 1862 and at the age of 12 started work in George Peacock’s jam factory pasting labels on jam tins six days a week, ten hours a day. From this humble beginning he created an empire spanning five continents with interests in jam, fruit, timber, mining and shipping. All this originated in these buildings that now comprise The Henry Jones Art Hotel. Henry Jones & Co’s motto “IXL” dates from approximately 1895 and, it is said, derived from Henry’s own quote “I excel, in all the products I make”. As a brand name this motto was an inspired choice, soon forming part of Tasmanian and Australian folklore. It became instantly recognisable with the man, his factories and his products.
